Half Moon Update 6-5-2009:

1. Half Moon Proceeding to New York Harbor for River Day week of programming on Hudson River.

The Half Moon departed Peckham Wharf in Athens, NY, at 0500 on Wednesday June 3, with an enthusiastic crew of twenty motivated souls. Our first layover was at Constitution Island, courtesy of The United States Military Academy and Constitution Island Resident Manager Roddy MacLeod. Thursday June 4 Half Moon is proceeding south to anchorage off Fort Lee, New Jersey. Our thoughts reflect back to the American Revolution and we find ourselves inspired by the example of our ancestors during this time.

2. Half Moon now up on Facebook and YouTube.

The original Halve Maen of 1609 was built for fast communication and commerce in the spice trade - it was the internet of its time, but wide bandwidth was measured in ship tonnage and a fast connection was measured in months. Today is a different matter. We still steer with a whipstaff, and weight anchor with a capstan, but now we are not only sending e-mail but are up on Facebook and YouTube (both set up while we are underway, thanks to David Howell and Ewout van Grondelle and John Mangrum).

3. Check upcoming arrivals and events on River Day week of programming.

Upcoming events of River Day include:

Friday evening June 5, Blessing of the Fleet off Battery Park, New York City. Half Moon will lead the fleet of replica vessels as they pass Battery Park, with blessings from spiritual and religious leaders, and comments from public officials. Approximately 6 to 8PM.

Saturday June 6, Start of Parade of Heritage Vessels up the Hudson River, starting at the Statue of Liberty at 9AM to arrival at Tappan Zee Bridge and nearby communities. Half Moon will land at the Piermont Pier approximately 6PM. The Parade of Sail up the Hudson River may be viewed from both the New York and New Jersey shorelines from Manhattan and Jersey City, north along the Palisades and Manhattan and into Westchester and Orange Counties in New York. Excellent viewing sites will be the Hudson River Park Trust piers along the Manhattan shoreline, Yonkers City Pier, the cliffs of the Palisades, and the Piermont Pier.

Sunday June 7, continuation of the Parade of Heritage Vessels will commence at 8AM off Tarrytown near Kingsland Park, and proceed to Haverstraw Bay. Festivities in Haverstraw Bay are in the community of Haverstraw and Croton-on-Hudson. The Half Moon will salute the dedication of the new Croton Landing Park just above the Croton Yacht Club. Approximately 10:30AM to 12:30PM, with cannon salutes by the Half Moon. The Croton Landing Park is kayak, canoe and bicycle friendly, so plan to get out while you are there - the weather is predicted to be beautiful.

Sunday June 7, approximately 4PM, The United States Military Academy at West Point will offer a formal salute to the Halve Maen, with fifteen salvoes, the proper diplomatic recognition of a foreign flagged vessel; the Half Moon will return salute. This high honor echoes the first salute of the young United States of America on November 16, 1776. The Dutch saluted the American ship Andrea Doria as she entered the harbor of Saint Eustatius in the Caribbean. The Dutch colony at Saint Eustatius was one of the few places American revolutionary forces could obtain much needed arms and munitions in the 1770s. Best viewing will be from Trophy Point on the Academy grounds (this requires entry to the military installation, so allow time for passing security); viewing is also available from Route 218, the Storm King Highway. Take care when seeking an area to pull over.

Sunday June 7, Flotilla arrives at Newburgh Bay. The Half Moon will berth at the Newburgh Municipal Pier at about 6PM with salutes and fanfare. Many events in Newburgh and Beacon from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon.

Monday, June 8, and Tuesday June 9, the Half Moon will have public interpretation dockside at the Newburgh Municipal Pier, with exhibits of Native American technology and trade goods, navigational tools of the Half Moon, life aboard ship, and demonstrations of cannon salutes. Free to the public, from mid-morning to 4PM on Monday, and mid-morning to 1PM on Tuesday.

Tuesday, June 8. Half Moon departs with flotilla at 4PM, leaving dock at Newburgh about 3:15PM to meet up with flotilla.

4. Upcoming Fresh River Voyage of Discovery with Goodwin College, Connecticut River and East Hartford, CT.

The Half Moon, in a continuing partnership with Goodwin College of East Hartford, CT, and with sponsorship from Pratt and Whitney in Connecticut, will conduct its 2009 Fresh River Voyage of Discovery from July 3 to July 10, 2009, traveling up the Connecticut River to arrival at East Hartford, CT, at the newly dedicated Goodwin College Waterfront Campus. The Goodwin College Waterfront Campus is an extraordinary example of adaptive re-use of a contaminated industrial site. What was an oil tank farm just a few years ago, is today a thriving college campus, serving non-traditional students centered in the East Hartford area. The Goodwin College campus is open to the public with beautiful views of the Connecticut River, waterfront trails, and observing access to Bald Eagles and other riverfront wildlife. The Half Moon will remain at the Goodwin College Waterfront Campus, open to the public on July 11,12, and departing on July 17. Half Moon Update 5-23-2009:

1. Help Needed This Weekend (May 16,17,18,19) in Last Push to Prepare Half Moon for Departure.

4. Crew Positions Available to Sail with Half Moon during River Day Programming.

1. Last Push to Prepare Half Moon for Departure to Poughkeepsie

The crew will work straight through Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday to ready the Half Moon for departure for Poughkeepsie. Volunteers are needed to help with the range of work to be done, from painting, to organizing gear, to cleaning. If you can help on any of these days, please just reply to this e-mail and let us know when you will arrive. Wear work clothes, and plan on spending at least half a day with the ship.

2. Join the Half Moon in Poughkeepsie

We need help leading tours while in Poughkeepsie. For those who can commit to helping in Poughkeepsie, or at later locations, we will run a training program on Thursday evening, May 21, 5:30 to 7:30PM, on board the Half Moon. The Half Moon will be docked at Waryas Park, at the Foot of Main Street, on the Poughkeepsie waterfront. This is one block from the Amtrak/MetroNorth station. If you plan to attend, please reply to this e-mail. Those attending should plan to help with tours in Poughkeepsie, May 24,25,26,27, or during the River Day week of sailing (see River Day schedule at http://www.exploreny400.com/riverday.aspx); during the River Day week of sailing the Half Moon will conduct public education about the ship and New Netherland from the docks where the ship will moor.

3. Tour the Half Moon in Poughkeepsie

The Half Moon will be open for tours in Poughkeepsie during the Memorial Day weekend. Visit the Half Moon from Noon to 5PM Sunday and Monday, May 24,25. On Saturday, May 23, the Half Moon will sail from 8AM to 1PM, off the waterfront near Marist College and Poughkeepsie. School tours will run on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 26,27.

4. Crew still being accepted to sail with Half Moon during River Day programming.

Crew positions remain available with Half Moon during the River Day programming. Both new and experienced crew are solicited to join the Half Moon, with priority given to those who can sail from June 2 to June 14 (boarding in Athens on June 2 and departing in Athens on June 14). Half Moon Update 5-14-2009:

Volunteers Needed to Finish Painting the Half Moon in Athens, NY

We are (still!) working feverishly to finish painting the Half Moon for our upcoming programs, and will work daily through May 19. We particularly need YOUR last-minute help the rest of this week and this weekend (and probably next Monday and Tuesday as well). If you can spare at least half a day (or better yet, a couple of days) please reply to this e-mail or call the ship's phone at 914.433.9747. There is plenty to do, and we always have a great time whatever we are doing. It is necessary to check in prior to coming to the ship for your first visit (as we are in an industrial environment). Work includes primarily sanding and painting with some cleaning and etc. There is truly something for everyone. No prior experience is necessary, as we provide all training (but, seriously, who HASN'T done a little painting?).

Half Moon Update 5-4-2009:

1. Volunteers Needed for Tour Guides and for Sailing
2. Volunteers Needed for Ship Maintenance in Athens, NY, Daily through May 19
3. Great News Regarding the Arrival of our Newest Crew Member

1. Volunteers Needed for Tour Guides and for Sailing

We have two upcoming programs where we will need sailors and tour guides.
No prior experience is necessary, as we provide all training.

For our program in Poughkeepsie, NY, we will need sailors to join the Half Moon on May 19 in Athens, and arrive in Poughkeepsie; then sail again on May 23 from 0730 to 1400; then sail from Poughkeepsie back to Athens, on May 28.

While in Poughkeepsie, we will conduct tours of the ship from May 24-27. Docents are needed to lead these tours, for the public on May 24-25, and for schools on May 26-27. A training session will be held at 5PM, Thursday, May 21 aboard the Half Moon, at Wayras Park, 1 Main Street, Poughkeepsie.

Then comes River Day: The Half Moon seeks crew from afternoon of June 2, boarding in Athens, NY, to New York Harbor arrival on evening of June 5. The River Day program commences in New York Harbor, and proceed upriver from New York Harbor to Albany, with overnight stops along the way. Final departure from the ship will be June 14. We seek crew who can sail with us from June 2 to 14; some positions will be available to those who can only sail for a few days.

When the Half Moon is at dock, we will conduct public interpretation of the ship and New Netherland on the dock (as we are moving each day, it is not feasible to board visitors on the ship). Volunteers are needed to meet us at the docks and help with dockside interpretation. Again, training is provided.

2. Volunteers Needed for Ship Maintenance in Athens, NY, Daily through May 19

We are working feverishly to finish work on the Half Moon for these two upcoming programs, and will work daily through May 19. If you can spare a minimum of a day (or better yet, a couple of days) please reply to this e-mail or call the ship's phone at 914.433.9747. There is plenty to do, and we have a great time with what we are doing. It is necessary to check in prior to coming to the ship for your first visit. Work includes: carpentry, painting, electrical, organizing, cleaning, etc. There is truly something for everyone.

3. Great News Regarding the Arrival of our Newest Crew Member

Some of you may recall that our down-rigging crew in the Fall, and our up-rigging crew in the early Spring included an obviously pregnant Jennifer Reilly. You can rest assured that not many ships get rigged with pregnant crew members, but then again, there are not many ships like the Half Moon.

And the great news is: Jennifer is no longer pregnant, her daughter came into this world on Tuesday, April 28, at about 1930. Mother and daughter and father James and even brother Peter J. are all doing very well, and are back at home now. The new arrival, tagged Spot for now, is graciously awaiting her formal name, and remains on her best behavior until she gets it. I understand that Peter J. is jealously guarding his status as the youngest person to sail on the Half Moon, and that Spot is already plotting (pun intended) to compete for this title. Time will tell.

Half Moon Update 4-12-2009:

1. Volunteer Crew for Shakedown Cruise April 17/18.
2. Volunteers needed for continuing work on Half Moon in Athens, NY.
3. Recruiting crewmembers for sailing on Half Moon, various dates May-November, 2009.

1. Volunteer Crew for Shakedown Cruise April 17/18.

The re-rigging of the ship is near completion, work continues on engineering, carpentry, and paint, but we are ready for the first shake-down cruise of the season. Crew are needed to board the ship no later than Friday morning, April 17, and depart late afternoon on Saturday, April 18. This will be our first opportunity to shake out the sails for the season and check all systems. Priority will be given to those who have already volunteered aboard the ship, and those who will sail with us on program voyages during 2009. If you are interested in joining this short shake-down voyage, contact Karen Preston at info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us or reply to this e-mail.

2. Volunteers needed for continuing work on Half Moon in Athens, NY.

Work on the Half Moon will continue through mid-May in Athens, NY. Anyone is welcome to help, and jobs are available for people with no experience to much experience. If you can join us for at least half a day, weekdays or weekends, please contact Karen Preston, info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us, or reply to this e-mail.

3. Recruiting crewmembers for sailing on Half Moon, various dates May-November, 2009.

From mid-May through mid-November the Half Moon will sail in many Quadricentenniel Programs, making appearances from New York Harbor to Albany, and on the Connecticut River. Crew are needed for all these voyages, and typically require a minimum commitment of a week to ten days at a time. If you are interested in joining the crew of the Half Moon for such a voyage, please contact Karen Preston, info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us, or reply to this e-mail, and you will receive further background about what is expected and when the sailing will take place.

1. Mast Stepping on Half Moon, Visit by DEC Commissioner Pete Grannis

The masts are going back in the Half Moon. We commemorated the mast stepping with a visit by Pete Grannis, the Commissioner of the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. Commissioner Grannis honored us by placing the ceremonial coins beneath our mast. See article at:

The mast stepping and rigging will continue through Friday, crew board the ship on Saturday, and by Sunday we will be moored at Peckham Materials in Athens, NY.

2. Volunteers needed with work on Half Moon in Athens, NY, at Peckham Materials

Our work refurbishing the Half Moon will continue through April and early May at the Peckham Materials dock in Athens, NY. We need volunteer help from people of all backgrounds during this time. Work will be done on weekends and weekdays. Plan for a minimum of a half day at a time. Jobs will range from organizing gear, to cleaning, to prepping and painting, to woodwork, to rigging, to electrical and mechanical projects. Training and tools provided, just bring a sense of humor.

3. We need a good ship truck and a good ship car

The trusty old blue van is really getting long in the tooth, and we need a reliable truck and a reliable car for ship related work. For a truck we could use a standard pick-up truck or a box truck. For a car, any standard passenger car, minivan, or Jeep would work fine. As our summer sailing crew and programs picks up, these vehicles become more and more important. If you can donate or loan us either a truck or a passenger car, it would go to a very good home, and a good productive use. Please contact the office at 518.443.1609 or reply to this e-mail if you can consider the donation or loan of a serviceable car or truck.

4. Welcome to sailing crew aboard ship.

Joining us for re-rigging and sailing with the Half Moon this summer are three outstanding volunteers, and more are expected through the season.
First, welcome Ewout van Grondelle, from The Netherlands, who will sail with us for the season. Ewout is a licensed mariner from the Enkhuizen Sailing School with extensive historical ship experience. Also with us from The Netherlands is Janine Oosterloo, who needs little introduction as she has sailed with us since 1998. Joining us for the first time is Simon Vaughan, from Birmingham, England. Simon works in Public Relations and Marketing, but also has a background in adventure sports and rigging. Simon and Janine will be with us through late April.

Ewout, Janine, and Simon are living aboard ship, and welcome home cooked meals. Volunteer with us, and you will get a chance to work with them in Athens.

1. Half Moon in the News/Major Winter Work Projects

Recent articles in the Albany Times Union and the Troy Record provide a good summary of work on the Half Moon over this past winter. This past season major efforts have followed two paths: first, to expand and improve our programming (with new artifacts, educational curricula, interpretive brochures, and programming); and second, to make physical improvements to the Half Moon (renew the rig, rebuild the forecastle, improve the engine room, and rebuild the reduction gear).

2. Volunteers Needed to Help Finish Work on Half Moon
3. Crew Opportunity for Move from Port of Albany to Athens, NY

The Half Moon will soon move from the Port of Albany to Peckham Materials, Athens, NY. Volunteers are needed to help move the ship from Albany to Athens. Once in Athens volunteers are needed to help finish the work aboard. We have a tight timeline, but expect to complete work at Scarano Boatbuilders in the Port of Albany about April 2, and depart there the weekend of April 4 and 5. Crew should board the ship on Saturday, April 4, stay overnight, and arrive in Athens mid-day on April 5. If you are interested in helping move the ship this weekend, please contact Karen Preston, info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us

The Half Moon will remain dockside at Peckham Materials through mid May.
While there, volunteers of all skill levels are needed to help with work on the ship. This work will continue weekdays and most weekends. If you can help, please contact Karen Preston, info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us . It is not possible to just walk up, as entry must be arranged ahead of time.

4. Schedule in 2009.

Our schedule for 2009 is developing well, with major program stops set.

1. Crew Needed for Newburgh to Albany Sail, 10 Nov to 13 Nov.

Crewmembers are needed to help move the Half Moon from Newburgh, NY, to Albany, NY.
The Half Moon will depart Newburgh on Monday morning, Nov. 10, and arrive in Albany by Wednesday, Nov. 13. Crew may join the ship as late as early Monday morning. We will need a good group of people to make this trip, and welcome new crew as well as experienced crew. If you are interested, contact Karen Preston, info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us for further information.

2. Tours of Half Moon in Newburgh, NY, 3 Nov to 9 Nov.

The Half Moon is berthed now in Newburgh, NY. Monday, 3Nov through Friday, 7Nov will be for pre-scheduled school groups. Saturday and Sunday, 8 and 9Nov will be open to the public from 10AM to 4PM. Volunteers are welcome to join us to help with the work in Newburgh. Visitors are invited to take a tour of the ship during these hours. Half Moon Update 10-5-2008:

1. Half Moon to relocate from Albany to Catskill to Board Students for Masters School Voyage of Discovery - volunteers welcome to sail.

Thursday, October 9, we will move the Half Moon from Albany to Catskill, NY, to prepare for boarding students from the Masters School in Westchester County. This repositioning voyage is for a day only, but is important for setting up the Masters School Voyage of Discovery. With the Fall season starting to come on, this should be a fun and beautiful trip. We will likely see some eagles along the way.

Volunteers should join the ship Thursday morning, as gangway removal and line handling will begin about 0830, with departure from Albany about lunchtime. Arrival in Catskill will be about 1800 (6PM). Carpools will help with return to Albany, etc. Anyone sailing is welcome to join the ship as early as Wednesday evening, and depart no later than Friday morning. It is fine to be aboard just for the day on Thursday.

2. Volunteers needed aboard ship for last days in Albany area.

Our final public tours take place this weekend, October 4 and 5, at Albany's Corning Preserve. If you can help with tours or help around the ship, please consider stopping by. We will also continue work on the ship Monday, October 6, through our departure on Thursday. Plenty of help is needed to dismantle the interpretive gear. No prior experience is necessary. Half Moon Update 8-12-2008

1. Crew Needed to Move Half Moon from Dry Dock

3. Thanks to those people and companies who have made this work period a success, and whose contributions now will make our work in 2009 possible.

1. Crew Needed to Move Half Moon from Dry Dock - Board ship by Friday on Staten Island, ship departs Staten Island Saturday morning, crew departs ship on Sunday.

We expect to finish our work and apply bottom paint by Friday morning, to re-launch the Half Moon on Friday afternoon. Additional crew are needed to help operate the ship at the time of re-launching on Friday, and again on Saturday as we move the ship from Caddell Shipyard to King Marine in Verplanck, NY. Crew can leave the ship on Sunday (there is a chance we will finish up by Saturday evening, but that is not guaranteed). No experience necessary, but you must contact the ship prior to boarding or coming to the shipyard. If interested, please reply to this message for further information.

2. Work continues on Half Moon in Dry Dock at Caddell Shipyard; work progressing very well, volunteers still needed.

The Dry Dock experience is unique, and very interesting. And to paraphrase Tom Sawyer, only very special people have a chance to try their hand at this work. Plenty of work remains for those who can join us in the Dry Dock at Caddell Shipyard. Jobs exist for every skill level, and training is provided for everyone. If you are able to join us, please call the Half Moon on the ship's line at 914.433.9747 - it is necessary to check in before arriving at the ship. Remember, this is an industrial environment and we must act accordingly.

3. Thanks to those who have made this work period a success.

Getting the ship to the dry dock, and then working on the ship in the dry dock, required the help of many people. 1. Half Moon to arrive at Caddell Shipyard This Thursday -- Help Needed

The Half Moon will enter drydock at the Caddell Shipyard this Thursday, August 7th, earlier than we had originally planned. Workers at all skill levels are urgently needed and no prior experience is required. The jobs to be completed include skilled and unskilled tasks, and there will be training for all.

We need a "full court press" here, people: work will continue seven days a week until approximately August 14th when the vessel will be re-floated. Heads up: volunteers will need soled shoes, long pants and leather gloves. Also, if you have them, please bring a hard hat and safety glasses. This is a heavy industrial area, so act accordingly. You will need to reply to this email with the day(s) you can work and your approximate arrival time. Please plan your arrival to be during daylight hours.

1. Crew needed for repositioning voyage from Athens, NY, to Staten Island.

The Half Moon will travel from Athens, NY, to Staten Island, NY, to prepare for entry into Caddell Shipyard for drydock work. Crew is needed to join the Half Moon on Sunday, August 3, with arrival in Staten Island on Wednesday, August 6. No prior experience is necessary, but priority will is given to those who have volunteered on the ship. Those interested in joining the crew should email Karen Preston at info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us , or reply to this message.

2. Help needed for ship work while in Caddell Shipyard, Staten Island.

After arrival at Caddell Shipyard, the Half Moon will undergo a period of extensive maintenance work aboard ship. This will include wood work, steel work, installation of gear, and bottom cleaning and painting. We need much help completing this work, with everything from hauling debris, to cleaning, to skilled labor. Anyone is welcome to join us, but everyone will need to abide by industrial safety standards. Training is provided by the Half Moon, crew will stay aboard ship. Conditions are rough, but Caddell Shipyard is a most interesting place to work. Again, contact Karen Preston at info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us for further information. Work will continue from August 6 at least through August 15.

3. Help needed onboard ship in Athens, preparing for departure to shipyard.

Prior to departure for the shipyard, we still need help aboard the Half Moon dockside at Peckham Materials in Athens, NY. Crew are aboard each day, with a wide array of activities. It is necessary to check in before arrival at Peckham Materials, as this is a secure, industrial site. Make inquiry through Karen Preston info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us , or call Jurgen Schuijer aboard the ship at 914.433.9747.

4. Fresh (Connecticut) River Voyage of Discovery concluded successfully.

The Fresh River Voyage of Discovery was an outstanding success, thanks to a great partnership between the Half Moon and Goodwin College in East Hartford, and the involvement of an extraordinary group of volunteers involved in all aspects of operating the ship and its programs. We ran delivery and return voyages between the Hudson and Connecticut Rivers, ran a Voyage of Discovery up the Connecticut River to East Hartford, and ran a week of Dockside Discovery programs with some top notch summer programs in the Hartford, CT, area. We would like to thank all of the great people at Goodwin College who made us feel so welcomed and appreciated, and who have done such a great job developing their waterfront.

Aboard are twelve middle school students from schools in central Connecticut; these students are learning to sail the Half Moon, and pursuing an academic program in river science. 1. Work Progressing Well on Half Moon in Athens, Volunteers Still Needed

A dedicated crew has made steady progress with renewing the spars and rigging on the ship, preparing the transom for new paint, and making engineering changes in the engine room. Work will continue through June 20 in preparation for our voyage through New York Harbor, Hell Gate, Long Island Sound, and into the Connecticut River. We still need help, and welcome anyone to join us in Athens at the Peckham Materials Wharf. Check in before coming, as this is an industrial site. 2. Sailing Opportunities Upcoming

Two sailing opportunities are coming up, from the Hudson River into Long Island Sound and back. Boarding the ship on the afternoon/evening of Friday, June 20, in Athens, NY, we will depart for New London, CT. Arrival in New London should be the 23rd, and we will need help with the ship until June 26; our student crew will join the ship on the 27th (see below). This will be an interesting voyage, with passages through New York Harbor, Hell's Gate, Throg's Neck, and eastward through Long Island Sound. Priority will go to those who have volunteered aboard the Half Moon, but others are welcome to apply for positions. Reply to this e-mail or contact Karen Preston, info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us directly.

The second volunteer crew opportunity is at our departure from East Hartford (see item 3 below). We expect to depart East Hartford about July 14, and welcome volunteer crew to join us for the sail down the Connecticut River, back through New York Harbor, and return to Athens, NY. Plan to join the ship in East Hartford on July 11 or 12, and arrive in Athens about July 18.

3. Voyage of Discovery and Public Tours in East Hartford, CT, with Goodwin College

Our arrival in East Hartford will be a festive arrival at noon on July 3 at the Goodwin College Campus in East Hartford. If you are anywhere near the area, please join us at this arrival. 4. Newest Crew Arrival: Sage Colley arrived May 29.

Sage Colley entered this world at 4:18PDT, much to the joy of her parents, Sky and Kara Colley. The family is happily settled in Portland, OR. Kara is teaching math at an area college, and Sky is building boats in a small shop near Portland. You can be sure that neither is getting much sleep right now. We wish them the best. 1. Final Public Tours of the Spring May 17,18

The last pubic tours of the Spring will be given on May 17 and 18 at the Riverfront Pumping Station in Albany, NY. Please pass the word to friends and family who may want to visit the ship. Tours will be given from 10AM to 4PM, on a first come, first served basis. Step into this time machine and see what shipboard life was like 400 years ago.

2. Help Needed Thursday, May 22, securing Half Moon gear

Our historical gear needs to be packed away and readied for our next programs. Help is needed with this work on Thursday, May 22. We will work from 8:30AM until the end of the day to secure the gear. No prior experience needed, we will provide training. Please respond to this e-mail or directly to Karen Preston at info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us if you can help on Thursday. If you decide at the last minute, just show up at the Riverfront Pumping Station, corning Preserve, Albany, NY.

3. Help Needed with On-Going Maintenance through early June

Ship maintenance will continue daily through early June. Plenty of work needs to be done while at the Riverfront Pumping Station in the Corning Preserve; once in Athens, the maintenance will continue on most days. We have projects for every skill level, from basic to advanced, in all areas from wood work to electrical to engineering to painting to rummaging. 4. Crewing Opportunity, May 23, Albany, NY, to Athens, NY

On May 23 we will depart the Riverfront Pumping Station for a one day voyage to Athens, NY. In Athens we will moor the ship at Peckham Materials and continue our maintenance work. This is a great opportunity to learn to crew aboard the Half Moon; both experienced crew and newcomers are welcome.

Priority will be given to those who have volunteered aboard ship this season, and you can still log volunteer time if you want to get aboard for this one day voyage. The only requirements are that you be a member of the New Netherland Museum and split the cost of provisions. Crew will need to board ship no later than 0800 on Friday, May 23 (you may board the night before), and depart in Athens at the end of the day. Half Moon Schedule Update 5-2-2008

May 2-8: Spring Voyage of Discovery: Middle school students from Albany and Rensselaer will board the Half Moon on Friday, May 2 in Yonkers, NY, and will arrive at noon on Thursday, May 8th in Albany, NY.

May 9: Set Up for Tours: An afternoon of volunteer help is needed dockside for preparing the Half Moon's historical exhibits for public and school tours.

May 10-11 and 17-18: Public Tours. The Half Moon will be open to the public for tours on Saturdays and Sundays from10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteer docents are needed to guide these public tours.

May 12-16: School Tours: From Monday through Friday, the Half Moon will be available for tours to pre-scheduled school groups from throughout the Capital Region. Experienced docents are invited to volunteer.

May 22-23: The Half Moon will depart Albany for Athens, NY around this time. Volunteers are still needed. The exact dates of this voyage are flexible depending on the needs of our crew.

Half Moon Update 4-6-2008

1. Crew needed to help move Half Moon out of its winter berth, April 11-13.
The Sun is coming out, and so is the Half Moon! We will move the Half Moon out of its winter berth on the weekend of April 11-13. Volunteers are needed to help with this task, no prior experience needed. If coming from out of town, plan to stay aboard the ship. We will rummage, de-winterize systems, open sea cocks, handle sails, and shake out all the cobwebs.
Getting the ship underway after a winter in storage is one of the best weekends of the year.

2. The Half Moon will conduct a Voyage of Discovery with Middle School students from Rensselaer Middle School and Philip Livingston Magnet Academy from May 2-8. The Voyage will arrive in Albany at the Corning Preserve at Noon on May 8 - everyone is invited.

3. Following its arrival in Albany, the Half Moon will be open for public tours from May 10-18. Group Tours on weekdays are scheduled through the Albany Visitor Center (518.434.1217), and Public Tours on Weekends 10AM to 4PM. We need volunteers to help with tours, both weekdays and weekends.
Training is provided for all volunteers helping with tours. Volunteers may serve as tour guides, or with the gift shop, or in managing the lines of people awaiting visits aboard. We have all ages helping with these activities, from student sailors to our ever stalwart retirees. A fun time is had by all.

4. As we all know, maintenance of the ship is continuous - we will have work taking place in Verplanck and in Albany. A variety of tasks need to be done, from minimal skill to highly technical. We have something for everybody. Schedules are flexible, and training is provided for all work.
