Coming to you straight from the deck of the Half Moon,
as she lies King Marine, Verplanck, NY Latitude N41 15', Longitude W073 58'
preparing to re-create the 1609 Voyage of Henry Hudson.

1. Voyage of Discovery with Middle School Students Gets Underway Sept. 8 at noon.
2. Efficient Delivery Voyage from Peckham Materials, Athens, to King Marine, Verplanck.
3. Major Work Completed During August.
4. Newsletter in the Mail

1. Voyage of Discovery with Middle School Students Gets Underway Sept. 8 at noon.

Our Middle School Voyage of Discovery gets underway September 8 at noon.

Our student sailors will re-create the 1609 voyage of Henry Hudson, sailing from New York Harbor to arrival in Albany on September 19. Follow the work of the students as their study river science, and learn to operate the ship.

Participating will be middle school students from Rensselaer Middle School, Rensselaer, NY; Taconic Hills Middle School, Columbia County, NY; Myers Middle School, Albany, NY; and Oneida Middle School, Schenectady, NY. Check their progress and their research at www.halfmoon.mus.ny.us ; daily postings will begin on the 8th.

The Voyage will culminate with an arrival ceremony in Albany, NY, at noon on September 19. All are welcome to attend.

2. Efficient Delivery Voyage from Peckham Materials, Athens, to King Marine, Verplanck.

The move from Peckham Materials, Athens, NY, to King Marine, Verplanck, NY, we smoothly and efficiently - just the way a shakedown voyage should go.

Depart Athens, 0530 on 5 Sept.; arrive Verplanck, 1530. We had a nice light northerly breeze, fair currents for most of the sail, and an early arrival in Verplanck. A great time was had by all, topped off by a refreshing swim at King Marine.

A big thank you to those who worked so hard to get the ship organized, and clean. Aboard were: Roxanne Wegman, Nora Reynolds, Chip Reynolds, Sarah Read, John Mangrum, Marieke Leeverink, Wendy DeGiglio, Dan Dawson, Sky Colley, Kara Colley, Jim Barry, and Karen Preston, who did not sail, but made it all possible.

A special thank you to Vicki Giles, who pre-prepared our food - what a great benefit.

Also aboard, in readiness for our Voyage of Discovery, were meals ready to eat prepared by Team Lawler - Sylvia Lawler, together with her friends Nancy Papish, Anna Marie Bonafide, Yvonne Rayow, Laura Bruno, Shawna Peckham, Mary Kay Pape, Lillian Everingham, and Cynthia Kunz. What a difference this makes. It would be worth going on the Voyage of Discovery just to eat the food!

And upon arrival in Verplank, we are greeted by the indomitable Cori Cumming, who not only escorted us around, but prepared dinner for us on Friday night. It sure helps to have friends.

3. Major Work Completed During August.

The last of our major capital projects for the summer wrapped up in late August, just in time for our quick run to Verplanck to start our Voyage of Discovery. In addition to the new channels for the main mast from earlier in the summer, the last leg included planking the starboard quarter of the ship and renewing a couple of frames. Similar work will continue into the future, as we plan and prepare for 2009. It is always fun to enter these big projects, as it provides a great chance for us to make new features on the ship; this time around we modified the kevels for handling the docking lines - of course, since it was the starboard side, we will rarely use that kevel, but it sure looks nice. Thanks to Mark Anaou, Kipp Van Aken, Grant Prime, Randi Dell'Aqua, Joe Bamberger, Jim Barry, Sky Colley, Kara Colley, Boyd Hottenstein, Bob Hansen, Sara Read, John Mangrum, Larry Fingar, and Peckham Materials - corrections and additions to the list will come in future mailings.

4. Newsletter in the Mail

Look for the arrival of a Half Moon newsletter in the postal mail later this month. If you would like to receive this newsletter, but do not, please reply to this e-mail with your mailing address and ask to be placed on the newsletter list.

Errata

An alert reader, Nora Reynolds, noted a typo in the previous update; the web postings of the Voyage of Discovery will start on Sept. 8 (not the 19th, as stated in the update).

Help Needed on Half Moon This Weekend,
June 30 and July 1

We need additional help this weekend, June 29, 30 and July 1, to help finish major projects on the Half Moon - you can make a big difference with even a short commitment.

Please consider joining us for a few hours, part of a day, or the whole weekend if you can.

New channels are being installed, engineering projects are being completed, and general help is needed to ready the ship for getting underway later in July.

The worksite is 30 minutes south of Albany, NY; you can make a big difference even with a few hours of participation.

The ship is located in Athens, NY, with a beautiful view of the Middle Ground Flats; sleep aboard if you can stay overnight.

For further information, reply to this e-mail, or contact Karen Preston directly at: info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us or 518.465.6671 (but not after 9PM). Speak clearly if you get the message machine, and leave a telephone number and e-mail address.

HALF MOON UPDATE, APRIL 29

1. HALF MOON UNDERWAY ON THE HUDSON RIVER,
CHECK OUR WEBSITE FOR SHORT REPORTS.

2. HALF MOON WILL BERTH IN ATHENS MAY/JUNE FOR
CONTINUED WORK AND ENGINEERING IMPROVEMENTS.

3. TELEVISIONS BROADCAST DATE SET APRIL 30 FOR
FIRST LANDING MOVIE, WITH HALF MOON FOOTAGE.

1. HALF MOON UNDERWAY ON THE HUDSON RIVER, CHECK OUR WEBSITE FOR SHORT REPORTS.

An enthusiastic crew joined the Half Moon at King Marine in Verplanck, NY, on Friday afternoon, and the rain did not dampen spirits in the least. All turned to, and readied the ship for departure at 0530 Saturday. The flood waters have receded, but the Hudson remains muddy and debris laden. A major objective is to shake out the sails and run the rigging for the first time this season. Check the website, www.halfmoon.mus.ny.us for updates from aboard the ship.

2. HALF MOON WILL BERTH IN ATHENS FOR CONTINUED WORK AND ENGINEERING IMPROVEMENTS.

The Half Moon will berth in Athens during May and June for continued work on the ship. Capital improvements with woodwork, engineering, paint, and rigging will be the central focus. Work will continue steadily during the time there - volunteer help is greatly appreciated - if you would like to help with the on-going work, please reply to this e-mail, or phone the office, 518.443.1609 or the ship 914.433.9747. Work on the ship during this time requires the physical ability to climb ladders. The ship is NOT accessible to the public nor to drop in visitors during this time, as the work being done makes it hazardous to host visitors aboard.

3. TELEVISION BROADCAST DATE SET FOR FIRST LANDING, WITH HALF MOON FOOTAGE.

The Half Moon portrayed the English ship Susan Constant during the filming of the made for television movie, First Landing, about the landing in Jamestown in 1607. Produced by the Christian Broadcasting Network, this movie centers on the experience of Robert Hunt in bringing Christianity to the New World. The film contains striking images of the Half Moon under sail, albeit under English flags. Filming took place in the Delaware Bay off Lewes, and off Sandy Hook, New Jersey, in July of 2006. The broadcast date is Monday, April 30. It is necessary to check local television listings for the time and channel. If you cannot view the movie, you can see the aerial images of the Half Moon at our website, where we fly the proper Dutch flags www.halfmoon.mus.ny.us

Half Moon Update 4/22/2007

  1. Preparations for Working Voyage, Verplanck to Athens, April 27-29.

  2. Food and Provisions for April 27-29 voyage.

  3. Progress with ship improvements in Verplanck, and further help needed.

  4. Need for assistance in office in Albany.

1. Preparations for Working Voyage, Verplanck to Athens, April 27-29.

Karen Preston is coordinating the crew list and transportation arrangements to and from Verplanck and Athens. email address info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us, home phone 518.465.6671 (please leave message with name, phone number, and message, and please do not call after 9PM). Please reply to this e-mail, or directly to Karen Preston, if you are interested in sailing. If you have already indicated your interest, but have not heard from Karen, then please send her an e-mail soon. Karen will provide all interested crew with medical forms and background information.

A few crew slots are still available, but we will make the final crew list in the middle of the coming week. Help is also needed with ferrying cars between Verplanck and Athens on Friday the 27th and Sunday the 29th, and with work aboard the ship in Verplanck during the day on Thursday the 26th and Friday the 27th.

2. Food and Provisions for April 27-29 voyage.

Vicki Giles is provisioning and running the galley for this voyage. If you intend to sail, and have food allergies or special dietary concerns, please contact her at vmg13x@yahoo.com.

Vicki would also appreciate help with preparation of entrees. If you can make an entree for 25 to 30 people, freeze it, and transport it to Vicki in Albany, or to the Half Moon in Verplanck, please contact Vicki at vmg13x@yahoo.com. She will provide menus and directions. Meals not eaten during the weekend voyage will certainly be eaten, with relish, during our working stay in Athens.

3. Progress with ship improvements in Verplanck, and further help needed.

Jim Barry, Kipp Van Aken, John Mangrum, and John Vallely spent the better part of this week making improvements aboard the ship in critical engineering systems, and in helping to recover from the floods due to the winter storm. The Half Moon weathered the storm well, but the water at King Marine was the highest we have seen in more than ten years, and persisted through two days.

Another correction to the thank you list of last week is Nancy Keyes Crosby, who did diligent service but also missed the roster sheet. Additional help will be needed on Thursday April 26th and Friday April 27th in Verplanck, as the ship is readied for departure. If you are able to help with ship preparations on those days, please reply to this e-mail. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to pitch in.

4. Need for assistance in office in Albany.

Joan Wilson, who has for many years managed our office with great humor and competence, will need to take a break for a period of time due to health issues. She will continue to be part of our team, but we need help in the office to cover the areas while Joan is out. If you are interested, and have a good sense of humor, good organizational skills, and basic computer skills (or willingness to learn), please respond to this e-mail. The office is in downtown Albany, and it is necessary to be present in the office during normal business hours on a regular basis, at least a couple of days a week, for several hours at a time. Exact responsibilities and times are flexible according to interests and availability.

Thank you all for your continued support and interest in our programs. It is clear that many people enjoy receiving the updates and the photos of our work. The updates will continue on an as-needed basis - but let us know if you have topics that we should address in these updates. We will attach photos at times, but will also work on a method to post these on the internet with a link.

The following is a message from our Captain, W.T. "Chip" Reynolds:
3/30/2007

  1. VOLUNTEER CREW NEEDED FOR SPRING OUTFITTING APRIL 6,7,8 2007 - KingMarine, Verplanck, NY

  2. THANKS TO EARLY WORK CREWS PREPARING THE SHIP FOR MOVEMENT

  3. UPDATE ON JOAN WILSON

1. VOLUNTEER CREW NEEDED FOR SPRING OUTFITTING APRIL 6,7,8 2007

Spring is here, and the Half Moon is ready to rock and roll. Two work crews have completed preparatory work to getting the ship underway the weekend of April 6/7/8, 2007. The main objective that weekend will be to de-winterize all systems, clear away the winter tarps, and move the ship to its working berth. We need a big gang to make this happen. No prior experience necessary, just a good sense of humor. The secondary objective will be to start seasonal refresher training for working aloft and gaining familiarity with the rig.

Those who can should arrive on Friday evening; we will commence work about 0800 on Saturday, April 7, and on Sunday April 8. It appears now that the critical time for help is Saturday afternoon into the evening, when the tidal height and currents will be favorable to move the ship. As always, this work will proceed rain or shine (or should we say snow or shine).  If you are available and interested, or have specific questions, please respond to this e-mail. Even if you cannot come, spread the word to others who might be interested we welcome new participants as much as returning veterans.

For those who can stay overnight, bring a sleeping bag and foam pad and stay aboard the ship. We will coordinate meals according to the response. Report to King Marine, 270 6th Street, Verplanck, NY 10596 (directions by Google or MapQuest work well).

2. THANKS TO FIRST WORK CREWS FOR TURNING OUT IN MARCH

Our first work crew boarded the ship in mid-March, on one of those weird warm days. It was so beautiful we almost removed all the tarps and got underway. Good thing we did not, because days later we had the biggest snowfall of the winter! The ship weathered the winter season very well, and only needed minor tinkering to clear up the typical winter wear, pump the bilges, and take inventory of work to be done. In late March a second group started the main engine, and continued planning and preparations for moving the ship from its winter berth to its working berth. Thanks go to Kipp Van Aken; John Mangrum; Bob Hansen; Joel Hulsey; Peter Barton (who gets the award for greatest distance traveled - from England); Danny Dawson; Chip Reynolds.

3. UPDATE ON JOAN WILSON

As many of you know, it is Joan Wilson, volunteer extraordinary, who keeps our office going. Joan entered St. Peter's Hospital in Albany on Friday, March 16 - the day the big snow fell - many people have asked how she is doing. She is now back home - I saw here today (Monday), and am pleased to report that the twinkle is back in her eyes, and her sense of humor and attitude are as sharp as ever, so don't try to trip her up. She will still face on-going chemotherapy and recovery, but is feeling much better about her status, and welcomes e-mails - just reply to this e-mail to send best wishes to Joan (just don't tell her how you found out the news!)

2. Crew Needed to Move Ship, Albany to Verplanck, NY August 18-20, 2006

The Half Moon will move from Albany, NY, to King Marine, in Verplanck, NY, to prepare for our re-creation of Henry Hudson's voyage up the Hudson River.
This move will take place the weekend of August 18-20, 2006. We will cast off lines after work on Friday the 18th, and arrive King Marine midday on Sunday the 20th. Crew can anticipate an early afternoon departure from King Marine on Sunday, which will allow time for travel back home. As always, preference is given to those who have volunteered time. Please note: We need a cook for this trip. If interested in joining this voyage, please call the ship at 914.433.9747, or respond to this e-mail.

3. June and July Programming Great Success

Our Three Rivers Voyage of Discovery with students from Union College in Schenectady, NY, was a great success. We completed our historical and scientific studies of the Hudson, Connecticut, and Delaware Rivers (the Three Rivers of New Netherland), and had a great time to boot. Check the web page reports of the trip at http://www.halfmoon.mus.ny.us/2006unionvod/2006unionvodhome.htm

We ended the Three Rivers Voyage of Discovery in Wilmington, DE, with great hospitality from the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation. We took a weeks layover there to remove our educational equipment and replace it with our historical interpretive gear. The ship then opened to tours for the Kalmar Nyckel's Gathering of Tall Ships, where we boarded more than 3,500 people. We worked hard, had a great time, and enjoyed and appreciated the support and interaction with the Kalmar Nyckel volunteers and crew. Check it out at:
http://www.kalmarnyckel.org/gots/

The return to the Hudson River was by layover in Lewes, DE, where we were again hosted by the University of Delaware Graduate Program in Marine Studies. Thanks to Art Sundberg, who once again rolled out the red carpet for us. During the return we participated with the Christian Broadcast Network in the filming of a documentary about the voyage of the Susan Constant to Jamestown in 1607. The filming went very well, and we will provide a later update as to when and where it will appear. We hope to get some good footage of the ship under sail.

4. Half Moon to Re-create Henry Hudson's Voyage and Open for Tours

Middle School students from Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, and Taconic Hills, New York, will sail the Half Moon in a re-creation of Henry Hudson's voyage in 1609. The students will complete an academic program, as well as serve as crew on the ship. They will live and work much as Hudson's crew did in 1609. Our ceremonial arrival will take place at noon on Sept. 19th in Albany - plan to attend this festive arrival.

The Half Moon will remain open to public tours from Sept. 21 to Oct. 20.
Weekdays will be for pre-scheduled groups only; scheduling is handled by the Albany Visitor Center, 518.434.1217. Weekends and Columbus Day will be open tours from 10AM to 4PM. Plan on visiting during that time.

We will also need help with our educational programs. If you are interested in learning to help lead tours, run the gift shop, or manage the flow of people, please call the office at 518.443.1609. You will work with a great group of people, learn a lot, and have a fun time with either the students or the public.

The following is a message from our Captain, W.T. "Chip" Reynolds:

We Get by with a Lot of Help from Our Friends

1. Work on Ship Completed, New Systems Installed
2. Three Rivers Voyage of Discovery Underway and Doing Well
(visit http://www.halfmoon.mus.ny.us/2006unionvod/2006unionvodhome.htm send a short e-mail to the ship at: info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us )
3. Half Moon Open for Tours in Wilmington, Delaware over July 4th

1. With an intensive flurry of activity, our crew completed work on new ship systems just in time to board the Union College students joining the Half Moon for our Three Rivers Voyage of Discovery. The next time you are aboard the ship, you will find a new generator, 20kw, provided by Watanabe Marine; expanded fresh water and black water tankage, provided by Corrosion Products; pumping provided by Edson Pumps; and a new sewage treatment system, provided by Headhunter, Inc. These new systems provide grand improvements both technically and in terms of crew comfort. Those who have sailed in the past will appreciate the dramatic change; new sailors will simply have to take our word for it - being able to run the coffee pots and all stove burners simultaneously is well worth the effort!

2. The Three Rivers Voyage of Discovery called for a great deal of preparation, even beyond the ship's physical improvements. Additional work went into program planning, curriculum development, and arrangements in the Hudson, Connecticut, and Delaware Rivers. Fortunately, the Half Moon has great friends and supporters throughout the Three Rivers of New Netherland. The ship is conducting an array of historical, geographic, and scientific studies that compare the three estuaries. Students are examining subjects that range from the role of women in New Netherland, to historical settlements in each river (see http://www.nnp.org/newvtour/index.html, to the distribution of foraminifera (a near-microscopic protist see http://www.bowserlab.org/), to tidal cycles and salinity gradients. Half Moon Update

1. PROGRESS IN SHIP RENOVATIONS

A great group of volunteer crew has been making incredible progress with renovations to the Half Moon. When we set sail on June 8, the Half Moon will be equipped with a new, larger capacity generator, new sewage treatment and holding system, expanded fresh water tanks, and redesigned interior. These improvements are great leaps forward for the ship, and enable us to continue our educational voyaging for years to come.

There is plenty to do, so if you can lend a hand between now and June 8, please call the ship at 914.433.9747 to obtain directions to the ship in Athens.

Thanks to all who have helped with this project:

Kipp Van Aiken; Mark Anaou; Bill Ralston; Sara Read; Jim Read; Roberta Read; Karen Preston; Mark Morel; Sky Colley; Bob Hansen; Nicholas Reynolds; Danny Dawson; Fred Wales; Ronald Lymburner; Woody Woodworth; Dan Barton; Rosemary Barton; Carolyn Niehaus; Danielle Garfinkle; Mark Bodian

2. THREE RIVERS VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY TO LAUNCH JUNE 8

A group of twelve Union College students will join the Half Moon for an exploration of the Three Rivers of New Netherland June 8-24. During this voyage, the students will compare and contrast the historical, geographical, and scientific aspects of the Hudson, Connecticut, and Delaware Rivers, the three rivers that comprised New Netherland. This pioneering educational program will post experiences and results of research on the internet at www.halfmoon.mus.ny.us. Check in with us as we make daily postings – we will welcome e-mails to the ship, but keep them short and text only.

3. CREW NEEDED LATE JUNE/EARLY JULY

Following the Three Rivers Voyage of Discovery the ship will remain in Wilmington, DE, to conduct tours over the July 4 weekend. We will need crew who can remain with the ship from June 25 to July 5 in Wilmington to help with ship security and tours.

On or about July 5 we will move the Half Moon from Wilmington to Lewes, DE, to ready the ship for the return to the Hudson River and the filming of a made for television movie. Although I hesitate to say this, WE NEED MEN WITH BEARDS (oh, yes, the women crew will still be running the ship, but those beards sure look good).

Crew will be needed to sail the ship from Lewes back to the Hudson River.

This will be an ocean voyage; crew will need to board the ship no later than July 7 in Lewes, DE (join earlier if possible, especially meeting in Wilmington). Filming will likely be on July 8-10, followed by the sail back to New York and the Hudson River. Historically, this has been our best sailing route, so please sign up early.

As always, priority will go to those who have volunteered time. Everyone will get training; if this is your first sail, it is best to join the ship early.

If you are interested in this voyage, contact Karen Preston, who will coordinate initial inquiries and travel; she may be contacted at:

info@halfmoon.mus.ny.us or by message at (518) 465-6671.

4. SHIP VISITS AND ACCESS

Late summer and early fall access for tours will likely be in the Albany area. As soon as we have exact dates, they will be posted here.

The following is a message from our Captain, W.T. "Chip" Reynolds:

The Half Moon Appears in The New World movie by Terrence Malick.

The New World movie, a fictional interpretation of the settling of Jamestown in 1607, opened in New York City and Los Angeles on Christmas Day, and is scheduled to open nationwide on January 13, 2006. For further information, check www.thenewworldmovie.com , where you can see the trailer with the Half Moon, and find further background.

Having seen the movie in New York City with my family, I can only say, Go See It.

But, keep this in mind:

This is a fictional interpretation, not a historical documentary; This is a lengthy, and unconventional film, and lends itself to a lot of discussion afterward; The Half Moon appears (looking good) several times, both sailing and at anchor, but this is not a sailing movie.

The film presents an extraordinarily strong sense of place. The feeling developed by the sound and images does make one feel as if transported to that time and place. The natural scenes are not prettied up, but naturalistic. Much is said about Malick's emphasis on the visual image, which is certainly strong here, but I found the sound to be equally powerful in creating the sense of place. The depiction of Jamestown is as such a settlement must have been - rough hewn, muddy, smelly, and lacking in discipline (which John Smith did impose both in history and in the movie). The scenes of the native villages are a phantasmagoria as seen from Smith's eyes, and then just a normal community once he sees them from the natives' perspective. The encounters between the natives and settlers range from peaceful to hostile, as was certainly the case (even Hudson's experience aboard the Half Moon ranged from brutality to peaceful relations). The scenes of the ships sailing in company are compelling - even during the filming, we understood how special it was to have replica vessels from Plimouth Plantation, the Jamestown Settlement, and the Half Moon sailing and working together. Let us hope that our replica vessels work in company again in some other circumstance (say, 2007 and 2009). There is much to experience in this film, even beyond the conceit of the romance between Smith and Pocahontas (which most people, including the filmmaker, know is not supported by the historical record - but this film is not a documentary). The central theme of the contrast and confrontation of cultures is quite poignant - and remains so even today.

The mission of the Half Moon will remain educational, with a fact based curriculum and approach to programming - we're not yet ready to sail off to Hollywood. But it was a special experience to participate in the filming of this movie, and now to see it released.

I hope you appreciate the film as I did.

Half Moon Update and Help Needed

1. Opportunity for Weekend Voyage on Half Moon
2. Engine being rebuilt at Peckham Materials
3. Maintenance Work Continues in Athens
4. Voyages of Discovery Successful, updates on web
5. One Day Workshop Celestial Navigation
6. Head's Up on End of Year Request for Contributions

1. Weekend Voyage on Half Moon, Volunteers needed

The weekend of November 11,12, and 13 the Half Moon will move from Athens, New York, to Verplanck, NY, to close the season. Crew will board the ship on Friday night, depart Athens before dawn on Saturday, and leave the ship on Sunday after lunch. This is a great chance for an introduction to sailing on the Half Moon. No prior experience is necessary; just bring warm clothes and a sleeping bag. Priority will go to those who have volunteered maintenance time this season (there is still time to get in some good volunteer work in Athens). To sign up, call the ship at 914.433.9747, or the office at 518.443.1609.

2. Engine being rebuilt in Athens

Peckham Industries, Inc., a great corporate friend of the Half Moon and the premier road construction material supplier in the Hudson River Valley, is rebuilding our main Diesel propulsion engine at their Athens, NY, fleet maintenance facility. Larry Fingar, head of the maintenance shop, disassembled the engine, checked all the parts, and began reinstallation of the new pistons - all in less than five days. Having our main engine back up to factory specifications is a great leap forward for us; it is quite a relief to have this work done as preventive maintenance rather than in response to a breakdown. Our entire crew is greatly indebted to Peckham Industries for making this improvement possible.

3. Maintenance work continues in Athens; Volunteers are Needed

While the engine is rebuilt, other work continues. Nearing completion is the repainting of the ship from the dark colors needed to film the forthcoming Hollywood feature film "The New World" (see www.thenewworldmovie.com ). With good weather the final touches will be applied this week and next. Woodwork continues to be repaired and improved, with the starboard wale being addressed this week. Rigging and treatment of the spars will continue until our arrival in Verplanck. Call the ship at 914.433.9747 if you are able to lend a hand with this work before Nov. 11. Please call before going to the ship, as we are in a secure location.

4. Fall Voyages of Discovery and Dockside Tours a great Success

Middle School students from the Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, and Taconic Hills School Districts sailed with us on a most successful series of Voyages of Discovery in September and October. Postings from these trips may be seen at http://www.halfmoon.mus.ny.us/2005sepvod/2005sepvodhome.htm

Three weeks of Dockside Tours also proved a great success; we even managed to keep up the tours on all but one of days of rain. On weekends we opened the Half Moon to the Public, and found great interest from visitors in joining the crew. We also launched our 17th century replica ship's boat, and while our week of planned sailing was rained out, the boat did row well, and took on no water once it had swelled. We will launch it again in the spring.

5. One Day Workshop on Celestial Navigation

Julie Teetsov, a friend of the Half Moon, will present a one-day workshop on Celestial Navigation on Saturday, November 19, 2005, in Saratoga Springs, NY. This should be a good introduction to the subject, registration is $25.00. Call 518.387.7551 or by e-mail at teetsov@crd.ge.com.

6. End of Year Request for Contributions

Please be on the lookout for our end of the year request for contributions, which will come in the mail. Thanks for your continued support.

Voyages of Discovery – September/October, 2005

These are educational voyages with an emphasis on working with students; we will re-create the voyage of Henry Hudson from September 10 through arrival in Albany on September 19. A second voyage will run from October 15 through October 23. In between we will need an experienced sailor to work with young people and adults sailing and rowing with our replica small boat on the Albany waterfront.

For further information about these upcoming opportunities, please contact the office by calling 518.443.1609, or respond by e-mail.

Volunteer Sail – Mid August, 2005
Interested Sailors need to respond as soon as possible.

From the night of Friday, August 12, through mid-day on Sunday, August 20, the Half Moon will be underway with an adult crew dedicated to sailing the ship with no fixed program. Our intent is to sail eastward (contingent upon weather) and really flex our wings with sail handling exercises and fun.

Priority will go to those who have worked aboard the ship and who can commit to the entire week of sailing. Board the ship on Friday night August 12, get underway early Saturday morning, remain underway until the following Saturday night, organize the ship on Sunday and depart by midday Sunday August 21.

Move to the Shipyard, Late July, 2005

We will have very little advance notice when it is time to move the ship to Staten Island to Caddell Shipyard. This will be an overnight trip, moving from Albany to Staten Island. We will also need people to remain with the ship in the shipyard and help with the work there.

Half Moon Weekend and Schedule Update
5-3-2005

On Sunday the clouds cleared, and the warm sunshine dried the decks and tarps and brought our work weekend to a fitting close. We accomplished a great deal, with improvements to the living areas and galley below deck, updates on engine and generator maintenance, and readying the inflatable boat for service next week. New crew completed training to go aloft, and returning crew completed their annual refresher training. Ray Phillips reviewed topics in responding to heart attack and other vascular emergencies, and provided an insightful discussion on fainting and other more common loss of consciousness emergencies due to vertigo and reduced blood pressures. All in all, it was a productive weekend with a good time had by all.

Danny Dawson will be aboard the Half Moon May 4,5,6, and would welcome help from anyone who can join him any of those days; call the office, 518.443.1609 to confirm if you can help with the Half Moon any or all of those dates.

Crew will work on the ship from May 11 through May 14; on May 14 students from the Capitol District will board the ship, for a Voyage of Discovery on the Hudson River that will arrive in Albany on May 20; please join us for our celebration at noon on May 20.

School tours will take place on weekdays starting May 23 and continuing through June 24. Public tours will take place weekends and holidays, 10AM to 4PM. Contact the Albany County Convention and Visitors Bureau, 518.434.0405, to inquire about times or to schedule a group visit.

Half Moon Update 2-13-2005

1. Sunday Article in the Albany Times Union
2. Trailer for The New World Movie
3. Upcoming History Channel Program on Henry Hudson
4. Winter Status of Half Moon
5. Spring Dates of Voyage of Discovery

1. The Albany Times Union ran a featured article on the Half Moon and its recent adventures filming Hollywood movies and History Channel documentaries. We were on the front page of the Arts section of the Times Union Sunday, February 6. If you can only access this via the internet, check with them on Sunday at www.timesunion.com and search for us. For those who had difficulty finding it, the link to the article by Mark McGuire in the Albany Times Union is: http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=329885&category=ARTS&newsdate=2/6/2005
(This link, text only, will remain active for an unspecified period of time.)

2. If you have been to the movies recently, you may have seen the promotions for The New World, the Hollywood feature movie starring Colin Farrell. Yes, that was the Half Moon seen so prominently in the filming. The Half Moon was in Virginia filming this movie in August - it was an amazing experience. The ship worked closely with director Terrence Malick to help create just the right appearances and impressions. We enjoyed sailing in company with the Godspeed, the Discovery, and the shallop from Plymouth Plantation. It was also an honor to have Christopher Plummer aboard the ship. If you are not a movie goer, but have internet access, check out the promotion at www.thenewworldmovie.com and let us know what you think (look carefully, it is easy to mistake the Godspeed for the Half Moon).

3. The History Channel will broadcast a series on North American exploration on March 28-29. One of the four documentaries will focus on Henry Hudson. We have worked closely with Lisa Wolfinger and Lone Wolf Films as they produced this documentary of Hudson's voyages. Filming with the Half Moon was on the Hudson River last October, with a great gang of our re-enactment crew - many familiar faces will appear in the documentary, some in great close-up. We will send more about this as the time approaches.

4. The Half Moon rides well through the winter at King Marine in Verplanck, NY. Ray Phillips checks her weekly, and assures us that the lines remain secure. Snow has piled deep on the decks at times, giving one the feel of what it must have been like for Hudson and his crew when they overwintered in the Hudson Bay in 1610-11. I saw eagles roosting on ice flows on January 26. Over the winter Bill Ralston will rebuild the gun ports, and thanks to an anonymous donor, we will improve the ventilation system on the orlop deck.

5. The Half Moon will conduct a Voyage of Discovery from May 20 to arrival in Albany on May 27, 2005. Once in Albany the ship will conduct school tours through the end of June and be open to the public on most weekends. We will certainly have many volunteer opportunities during that time, so please check in with us. Further scheduling dates will be announced at a later time in Spring, ‘05.

The following is a message from
our Captain, W.T "Chip" Reynolds:

After a great season, it is time to move the Half Moon inside its winter berth. This will take place Saturday and Sunday Dec 4 and 5, 2004, at King Marine in Verplanck, NY. This is another one of those "many hands makes light work" types of projects. We will move the ship inside the bulkhead at King Marine, adjust and place tarps, set dock lines, install our 'ice eaters,' and winterize the generator and other systems.

Please meet on the ship at 0900 (9AM) on Saturday, Dec. 4. With good weather we will move the ship before noon, and continue the other work through the day and on Sunday morning. If the weather stops us from moving on Saturday, our fall back is Sunday morning at about 0700 (7AM). We will finish by noon on Sunday, allowing people driving time to get home before dark.

If you can help, please confirm by sending an e-mail to:

wtr@halfmoon.mus.ny.us

State your time of arrival and departure from the ship. Driving time from Albany is just over 2 hours; from New York City, just over one hour.

It is possible to sleep on the ship; bring a warm sleeping bag.

Thanks for your continued interest, and have a pleasant Thanksgiving.

HALF MOON UPDATE-
Upcoming crewing opportunities
Ship open for tours
Recent Activities

COOK NEEDED:
We need a COOK for the period September 16 through September 29, during our annual re-creation of Henry Hudson’s Voyage up the Hudson River. This is a critical position in the overall operation of the ship – it is both a challenge and a lot of fun. Please contact the office at 518.443.1609 if you are interested/available for this position.

CREW NEEDED FOR HISTORICAL FILMING
Starting Friday, October 15, we will work with the History Channel to film a documentary on Henry Hudson, and will need a full crew for the week. Men and women are welcome to join this crew, but we will need a group of men with beards (or at least willing to stop shaving now) for filming during this project. We will be operating small boats, sailing the Half Moon, and firing cannon and muskets for this project. Call the office at 518.443.1609 if you are available. The cook position is already filled.

HALF MOON OPEN FOR TOURS
From October 2 through October 15, the Half Moon will be open for tours in Albany’s Corning Preserve. October 4-8, and 12-15 will be for school group tours; October 2-3, and 9-11 will be for the general public. For further information, contact the Albany Visitor Center, 518.434.1217, or to volunteer, call 443.1609.

RECENT FILMING PROJECT SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED
During the month of August, the Half Moon participated in the filming of a major Hollywood feature film, The New World, by Terrence Malick. The film is about the founding of the Jamestown Colony in 1607, and filming took place on the James and Chickahominy Rivers in Virginia. All our hands faced some unique experiences, sailing the ship in tight quarters, performing exacting maneuvers, and working long days to get the job done. The sail down to Virginia was great – we set sails off Sandy Hook and did not strike them until we were in Virginia waters. The weather held very well, with clear skies most of the two weeks we were in Virginia; in the return trip we did not find favorable winds for sailing until making the approach into New York Harbor, but did end the voyage with a magnificent sail through the Verrazano Narrows and New York Harbor. Look for the movie to release in November, 2005.
